RESEARCH
The Trust conducts a wide and on-going programme of research into conditions affecting building workers in Ireland.

Dr Harold Brenner has recently completed part two of the 'Patterns of Ill Health' study covering the period 1996 -2004. This follows on from our earlier report which covered the period 1981 - 1996. The report will be published during 2006 and it will be interesting to see how the types and duration of absence from work through certifiable illness has changed, if at all, through the years of the 'celtic tiger'. During the period 1981 - 1996 the most common cause of absence from work (30%) was injury, followed by infectious disease (25%) and musculo skeletal disorders (13%).
It's a sobering thought that the most common cause of absence from work was entirely preventable.
In January 2006 we commissioned a post graduate fellowship entitled 'Ergonomic Aspects of Blocklaying, Bricklaying and Masonry'. Basically it is a study into the musculo skeletal effects of poor ergonomic practice. The study will be conducted by Ms Rachel Nugent B.Sc.a graduate of NUI Galway under the direction of Prof Enda Fallon B.E. M. Eng. S. FIES
The final report is due to be published in early 2008.
