Press Release
CWHT has carried out health screening in various Fás and Iinstitutes of Technology over the last two years. Each individual screened was asked to complete a lifestyle questionnaire, the purpose of which is to get a picture of the state of health and living habits of the average Irish construction apprentice. A breakdown of the results revealed some startling facts;
A disturbing 47.3% were smokers.
    (This is almost twice the national average.)
95.7 drink alcohol and 76% binge drink on a regular basis.
31.3% were overweight with 6.3% being obese.
8.2% were found to have raised blood pressure
9% had above normal cholesterol.
5.2% had impaired lung function.
25.2% referred to their GP for further examination.
For a group of individuals whose average age is just 21 years, these results are most alarming. Our nurses referred over a quarter of all apprentices to their family doctor for further treatment. These referrals were exclusively for conditions detected during the screening. Overall, the health of construction apprentices is only marginally better than workers twice their age.
