COLON CANCER
Colon cancer is curable if caught early. Nevertheless there are about 1700 people in Ireland diagnosed every year.
The test is simple and requires the worker to take home a small kit. At home the worker will take three small stool samples and place them on specially prepared slides over a three day period. The slides are then returned to the lab in Tallaght Hospital in a prepaid envelope.
Back in the lab the samples will be examined for the presence of blood. If this is found the worker will be offered a colonoscopy, which is a surgical procedure to examine the colon and bowel.
Workers who are offered a colonoscopy will be required to travel to Tallaght Hospital by appointment. CWHT will pay for the surgical procedure and as far as possible this will be carried out on a Saturday. Workers will be responsible for their own travel costs. The average cost of a colonoscopy is 500. This is a very valuable offer to building workers.
Workers who cannot participate in our on-site screening clinics can still avail of the free Colon Cancer test Click here to register.
