CANCER
Cancer is the second biggest killer in Ireland, after heart disease. In recent years, there has been an increase in the incidence of certain cancers, such as colon and prostate. Causes for this are inconclusive, however it is known that up to 40% of cancers may be related to diet.

You can help yourself by eating a sensible, balanced diet. That means cutting down on high fat foods, and processed foods containing too much salt, and eating instead, fresh fruit and vegetables, and all other things in moderation.

The next big no is smoking. If you smoke then quit now. You stand a 1 in 200 chance of getting cancer as a smoker so there is no argument....just quit.
Next there's the drink. Yes unfortunately there is a link between alcohol and cancer. Stick to the recommended weekly maximum...21 units for a man and 14 units for a woman. In plain English that's 11 pints a week for a man and 7 for a woman.
Finally there's exposure to the sun. Face it, we just don't have the skin for prolonged sun bathing. Most of us are pale faces. Never mind the Spanish and the Italians, they've been living with wall to wall sunshine for generations, and most of them are born with a great tan. But we don't! We live in cloudy land and the occasional burst of blistering sunshine has got to be treated with respect, so use sun cream and resist the temptation to peel off.
